The Independent’s new app, powered by Pugpig Bolt aims to use its combined subscription and ad revenue model to help the newspaper hit four million registered users by the end of 2022.

The Independent used to have two separate apps – Independent Daily Edition (a digital newspaper) and Independent Premium, both powered by Pugpig and both offering paywalled content to paid subscribers – but on 12 May went live with a new combined version.

The new app is also open to non-subscribers, of which The Independent claims to reach around 100 million worldwide each month.

Non-paying readers will see adverts and will have to register with their email address in order to access the app as part of The Independent’s Anonymous to Known first-party data strategy.
