3.6× more engagement than web: the impact of Lookout Local’s mobile apps

A seamless Newspack and Pugpig Bolt integration powering two native apps in two local communities - Santa Cruz and Eugene-Springfield - driving sustainable, long-term engagement and a scalable, repeatable model for local news growth.

ABOUT LOOKOUT LOCAL

Lookout Local is a digital-only local news network founded to reinvigorate community journalism. Built on the belief that trusted local news is essential to a thriving community, Lookout produces local reporting to serve the people of Santa Cruz, California and Eugene-Springfield, Oregon. Lookout represents a new generation of digital-first, reader-supported news organisations committed to sustainable, independent journalism.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVES

  • Deliver a premium native mobile experience to two communities previously without one
  • Deepen audience engagement with hyper-local journalism through owned, direct channels
  • Build stronger reader relationships independent of search and social referral traffic
  • Scale to multiple local markets without expanding the team or introducing new publishing workflows

WHAT WE DID

A seamless Newspack integration

Our integration with Newspack – the WordPress-powered CMS built for local news – means that any story published to the web automatically and instantly publishes to the app with no additional steps and no extra overhead. This single-workflow approach removes the technical and operational barriers that often make app development prohibitive for lean local news teams.

Two fully native apps, one shared platform

Both titles launched from a single shared platform and product vision, complete with local reporting, breaking news alerts, events, audio, and interactive features in a premium mobile experience. Our scalable architecture means the same foundation, design system, and Newspack integration could be deployed efficiently across both distinct local markets.

Push notifications, playlists and member experiences to build daily habit

The apps leverage a smart push notification strategy to surface breaking local news instantly. Alongside a daily story playlist, member-exclusive content experiences, and engagement-driving games, these features encourage intentional, repeat engagement and build daily habit.

THE RESULTS

App users engage up to 3.6x more than web-only readers

App users demonstrate dramatically stronger engagement habits than their web counterparts. In Eugene, app users average 11 sessions per month compared to just 3 on the website. In Santa Cruz, app users average 7 monthly sessions versus 2 on web. The apps are becoming a genuine daily habit for local news.

An average of 107% growth in monthly active users since launch across both apps

Both apps have seen sustained growth in monthly active users since launching, up 105% for Eugene and 108% for Santa Cruz. Sustained growth in a second market validates the approach as a repeatable and scalable model for multi-community expansion.

~5,000 downloads per app

Both apps are approaching 5,000 downloads each (Eugene: 4,895; Santa Cruz: 4,852), with strong organic adoption across both communities and no significant marketing investment required.

An average of 123% increase in total engagement time across both apps

Total in-app engagement time has grown by 153% in Eugene and 92% in Santa Cruz since launch. Readers are not just returning more often; they are spending significantly more time with Lookout’s journalism each visit.

Fast route to market for both apps

Both apps were launched in just 12-16 weeks from kick off. This included initial scoping through to design, integration, testing and launch. Using a scalable approach across the two apps allowed the Lookout Local teams to move from decision to live product rapidly with a streamlined, efficient development process.

Two markets. Zero operational expansion.

The second app required no additional staff, systems, or new workflows. Both apps run within the same integrated structure, proving that local news organisations can sustainably operate premium native mobile products at scale, without the complexity or cost that typically makes app development out of reach.

Testimonial Author Image

In an age where Google search referrals are following the path of Facebook referrals, now more than ever, mission-driven news publishers have no choice but to focus intently on direct, 1:1 relationships with high-value readers, and turn them into members and subscribers. Hugely importantly, we have strongly reached over into majority direct traffic in Eugene. Through our early Newspack partner work with Pugpig, we’ve had a great give-and-take, roadmap-focused experience, a partnership that has legs for the future as the Lookout Local network continues to grow.
